In this week's class, Mr. Charles gave feedback on the whole class's exercise 4 before giving a few insights on starting out Exercise 5, which is our last exercise before project 1.
[Self-Portrait]

For this week's recorded lecturer Ms. Jinchi gave insight on our upcoming project about self-portrait, the recorded lecture covered two topics that are; Self and self-portrait.
Ms. Jinchi cut it down to the basics and started off with the term 'self' to better understand carrying out various ways of designing a self-portrait.
The common definition for 'self' usually means oneself, one person, or us or ourselves as that one person. 'Your' self is your basic personality or nature, especially considered in terms of what you are really like as a person. A person's essential being distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action.
Many things contributed to a person to themselves.
The next topic the recorded lecture covered was 'self-portrait'. The definition of the word means a self-representation in a form of a drawing/painting/sculpture/design. A visual depiction of the self.

From the examples of the portraits above, Ms. Jinhi mentioned how a self-portrait can be portrayed in various ways with other subjects that oneself closely relates to or simply portrays them just as much.
Whether it'd be a pattern, a particular perspective, or even an animal or being in an environment of our choice. The traditional way of one's head to shoulders self-portrait can be much more than that.
Modernized self-portrait
Since the world's eras continue to change and develop for the better or even to just apply much more outstanding ways towards art and design it also fits in with the way people portray themselves through design, which in a way is fascinating.
I understand far into this topic how many elements are added into the portrait with the main subject to resonate deeper meaning and reflect upon the person in the portrait with those objects or elements, whether it be a certain principle or color or even a pattern.
These elements and principles would always have a meaning that could portray a person, the portrait just has to be displayed in a way that a viewer will understand or have relations to.

As you can see from the kinds of self-portraits shown above there are many examples of design elements and principles applied to them to be interpreted by a viewer of how the person portrays themselves in a self-portrait.
Project 1 - Self - Portrait

Visual research/inspiration:
When it comes to self-portraits for me, I like to think of putting in myself as a symbol that correlates to the kind of action that I display. Another thing that I think would portray me as a person are colors and other elements that I hold close to my heart.

Figure 6.1.8 - collage self-portrait |
I suppose to put it in simpler words, I want to attempt to have my self-portrait have a medium of collage of photographs that I hold close to my heart and a few digitized elements.
Idea Development:
My sketch idea resonated from this particular portrait that I stumbled upon while doing research, I like the idea of the colors rays going outwards behind the person. On the other hand, I asked a few of my closest friends and a family member what color I radiated most.
Fascinating enough, most of the colors I got from them were repeated and well a few more colors added to them. Since colors have their own meaning to them, having colors like yellow, purple, and pink were very self-explanatory and it also shows how much I really am to the people around me to have the same color radiated from me when asked by different people.

Both the sketches have the same concept of me being in the middle of the canvas but having the colors displayed differently.
Another thing to add to my self-portrait is to be able to portray the quirky side of me which points out the colors. Though the sketches are a way to just experiment with the colors I'm working with.
Progress:
Figure 6.2.2 - Progress #1, May 18th, 2021 |
In the progression, it maaaay of look like as if the subject (me) that's meant to be in the middle resulted to be in the corner of the canvas, although keeping the colors that radiate from the subject still remains. Adding to that, I wanted to put the composition of the golden ratio as a form of practice.
Figure 6.2.3 - Progress #2, May 18th, 2021 |
The next step of completing this self-portrait is that I added the things I like and favor into one of those radiating colors. Also creating a collage within those shapes of places and activities I hold really close to my heart.
Figure 6.2.4 - Final progression, May 18th, 2021 |
For the finale, I added in a few more favorable subjects like cats and well the kitties that I have.
Final Outcome:
For my self-portrait, I tried to be honest with myself in how I wanted to potray myself as a person to a viewer through this piece. Because I tend to like a lot of things and still have trouble settling into one thing I really like or something that is known and I would subject myself to.
So with that, this self-portrait is as close as it can be to potray me as a person with bright colors that I find appealing to me (in general I really love colors, I can't just choose one, they're all so pretty!) and a place where I would always long for and the little knick-knacks of owning journals and sketches books to doodle into them, most importantly my cats that I feel define my whole personality and the quirkiness I feel like I am as a person with those radiating colors!

Reflection

What I was able to reflect on project 1 was that no matter the kind of medium or outcome the kind of self-portrait I made as long as it has the elements that portray us, it counts as a self-portrait. It was also really generous of Mr. Charles to give us the freedom on how we want to carry out.
I was able to get really drawn in looking into collage work even more. To maybe make up last week's (Week 5) exercise. Even though it may not have its 'professionality' to it but it's a good way to learn about compositions since collages somewhat work better and look more appealing with them.
Other than that, it was fun to try and look into ourselves with this project to be able to potray and design who we are based on elements, colors, and things that alongside help us display ourselves to another person.
