This week's lecture was more towards Mr. Charles giving feedback on week 5's exercise to the whole class since the class was already commencing into starting out Project 1 where we design our own self-portraits!
[The Importance of Observation]
May 14th, 2021
-
Ms. Jinchi's recorded lecture talked about how observing plays an important role in many different kinds of educational domains. For example;

Figure 7.1.2 - engineers standing at a construction site |
These are only a couple out of many professions out there that require observation and how much it's imperative to build, make and deliver conveniences to the world!
Designers and Observation
That's when designers come into the picture! Because, out of every profession out there, designers do just as many observations in many different kinds of aspects to be able to create their art and design.
For designers, observation is as essential as it allows them to see "problems" and get ideas for solutions to them and by that, it means different ways of developing an already existing object but enhancing it through problem-solving skills and ALOT of observations in enhancing it to make it more convenient for a user.

Figure 7.1.4 - elevated iPad holder |

Figure 7.1.4 - table blanket warmer |
The images shown above are a few inventions that had observations in making existing things a little more comfy for people, cause what I notice is that we still want to be able to get things done, even if it means being a little more comfortable doing it.
Adding to that, felines are mostly domesticated and their owners are worried to have them go out in the world that could be a danger to their safety so a bag to provide for cat lovers to be with their cat and exploring at the same time works super well.
To put it in simpler words, product designers do a lot of observations and learn many aspects to make sure a design makes sense and provides convenience for a person's daily life.
Observations of surroundings
Observing our surroundings are also ways for designers to be inspired in designing a house or a piece of clothing whether it be a uniform or a sense of fashion for photoshoots. Our surroundings no matter the area can add appeal and benefits to a person's wants and well-being in an environment.

Project 2 - Sense of Place
May 26th, 2021
-
Project 2 focuses on a place or any place where, to me, I would invest a lot of emotions or thoughts. Though starting it out was a little challenging for me since I was struggling to get a grip on what I needed to do.
Starting out:
So with that, I situated myself in my room where I was in a position with the access of viewing it entirely. I noticed one spot in my room of a light source casting a shadow from the door into the wall, it looked like a dog's muzzle to which I found funny and intriguing, after being asked by Mr. Charles how it made me feel.
-but on my own, I still felt confused about what to do, there was the assistance given by Mr. Charles and a little feedback given by him too.
Figure 7.1.8 - Mr. Charles' interpreted sketch on my image, June 2nd, 2021 |
What he pointed out was the kind of image that I took that he suggested a theme to it, it was called liminal spaces a kind of thought and feeling to it that makes you question where you are and who you are or what your doing type of effect on a person or anyone.
Which was true, I finally understood that. The kind of spaces that has an empty feeling to them.
So I took that idea in mind of liminal spaces, did a few discussions on it with a peer, went through Pinterest to see if there were a similar concept to those spaces with a different feeling.
Visual research/idea development:

Figure 7.1.8 - We all grow up eventually, June 2nd, 2021 |
I stumbled upon this image and it gave me my own personal feeling towards the whole concept of "liminal spaces" although the image isn't quite a space it's more of an area.
-and what sparked in my mind was a kind of free-spirited, but also down bad heartless and psychotic feeling to it with a hint of toxicity. In a simpler way to put it, it's like a form of hurt that just turns you into a maniac.
It has a kind of theme to it, which is quite modern and noticeable in this century and it becomes an aesthetic, but behind all the coolness of how it looks, it still has a deeper feeling to it. What fascinated me was the kind of effect that played in my mind and the emotion I felt even when just looking at the image.
What I'm trying to put to words is that every human being has felt that hurt before, whether it'd be love between two people, or the lack of compassion from a parent, or even just ignorance from a friend. As toxic as it is, what I feel like if a person hasn't developed the way they feel they grow anxious, they're obsessive and possessive, they can go as far as being reckless as well.

Figure 7.2.1 - Setting fire to your lawn, June 2nd, 2021 |
Mainly, what I notice the majority of these feelings that lead up to these kinds of images are towards 'love' that just screams the saying "If I can't have you, no one can." And at times, feeling that feeling and going through that mindset makes you feel confident (the kind of confident that hurting other people is fun because you're just as in pain.) An individual that covers up their trauma with being reckless and carry out fearless things even if it gets them killed or have them kill.
In reality, these emotions may be false and we're just too much in our heads which leads me to not make any sense or I just watch too many manipulative toxic shows about lOvE.
Moving on! That particular emotion towards the images above doesn't always last long, sometimes it crosses through my mind, and it's a choice for me to let it stay or forget about it, AND sometimes when we want a certain emotion to pro-long songs or music usually help.
Lie to me by 5 Seconds of Summer
Checkmate by Conan Gray
Lover of Mine by 5 Seconds of Summer
I feel like these songs have a heavy influence on the kind of emotion and how it regards the place that I displayed above.
Experimentation:
I accumulated a few more images that correlate to the place of the area, and fuels the kind of idea my mind was interpreting. The images below are some pictures that had the same vibe with each other. I place them in a collage mood board kind of concept.

Figure 7.2.4 - mood board further inspiration #2, June 2nd, 2021 |
What I noticed was the number of shadows it cast, just like the first-ever image that I took. There were also its props and effects to it (like fire) and sunsets... a lot of sunsets.
At this point, I feel as if it can be in quite a lot of an environment, as long as it has its subjects and idea to reference it off, so with that I experimented with a few images that I took.
Figure 7.2.5 - Sunset, June 2nd, 2021 |
Figure 7.2.6 - Another sunset! June 2nd, 2021 |
Since my inspiration was mostly influenced by the images that stumbled upon and implemented into the mood board, there were great uses of shadows cast with light sources from sunsets. The identifiable way was the type of lighting it held in the images, it seemed more of natural lighting going on.
The place that I chose started off at my balcony in my apartment, I felt like there could be a story narrated from this spot that I capture, and to better have it make sense the sunset had associations with it.
Sketches/idea development:

Figure 7.2.7 - Simple sunset sketch, June 2nd, 2021 |
What I did first sketched out the space to make it easier for me to evaluate what I would maybe add or implement a subject that can collaborate with the brightness of the sunset, like a silhouette.

Figure 7.2.8 - Sinister figure, June 2nd, 2021 |
I wouldn't say I'm the best at sketches, but the sketches did help plan out how I wanted to use the space if I were to add a subject or if I were to manipulate the image and make it seem a person there would have a harmonious combination to it in a chaotic theme to it.

Figure 7.3.1 - Pose reference #2, June 3rd, 2021 |
After a few experimentations with poses (which was a few), I picked the ones where i could manipulate it in a way where it tells a little story.
Progression:
What I did was like added in another pose of me in a sense to implement that there were two personalities going on.

Figure 7.3.5 - adding more elements p2, June 4th, 2021 |
Figure 7.3.6 - Adjusting brightness and contrast, June 2nd, 2021 |
Since the images had very heavy exposure and saturation towards it, I messed around with adjustments to it until it had a similar effect, and I made the horns more visible and sharp instead of blunt and from there it's close to it being completed.
Final Outcome:
![]() |
Figure 7.3.6 - We'll meet again, June 4th, 2021 |
At times a certain spot with the perfect lighting and a view that makes you ponder upon things can really set you in a mood that sometimes could be fun and enlightening, but at times it sets a fiery emotion and a contemplating thought that runs through your head.
The feeling that came with this image has sort of a narrative towards it, 'We'll meet again." the way I like to think of that sentence is how this character will break down every encounter that she manipulates. She engraves trauma into the minds of their subjects hence 'meeting again.' even when she isn't always around.
It's between a vulnerable soul that fuels her maniacal ways of possessing them and breaking them down as she as well is broken inside. A sinister side to herself projects conflict on her and on the people she decided to feel pain.

Reflection
June 4th, 2021
-
Project 2 had an interesting take and start for me, I tend to notice that I put a lot of my thoughts and emotions into certain things that I never thought that perception could weigh that down even more. It was fascinating to be able to even feel a certain emotion towards space. I do in all honesty have felt spaces and how it affects the way we think and feel, but thinking really deep on the principles and elements to potray more to it took a really intriguing turn. Then again, it was fun to be able to even have narratives that relate to the space and the feeling that we have towards it.
