CLosing into Typography's final task, Mr.Vinod and Mr. Shamsul explained briefly how the class will be making typographical stickers to be used on Telegram and our design would be spread around the whole Taylor's campus! The stickers are based on celebrations in Malaysia and celebrations in general. Each of the students will be choosing one celebration to design a typographical sticker on a holiday/celebration they chose.
The celebration that I chose and suggested our of the list is "Happy Pride". With the topic on set, I started off the sketches.
Sketches:

Figure 1.1.1 - 'happy pride' sticker sketches, June 4th, 2021
|
I started off with some simple sketches I did in photoshop before experimenting with the typefaces sketches in adobe illustrator. I had a few ideas in mind, but personally, I really liked sketch 1, sketch 2, and sketch 5.
Later I furthered the experimentation in adobe illustrator, I decided on using 2 typefaces; Gill Sans Std and ITC Garamond to fit the expression of my celebration.
Further explorations:
 |
Figure 1.1.4 - Sketch #4 idea developments, June 8th, 2021 |
I did a few different idea developments and worked around the different rotations and a few distortions to the elements and the texts.
 |
Figure 1.1.5 - approval of sketch #2 and #6, June 8th, 2021 |
Approval was given by Mr. Vinod on further implementations with sketches 2 and 6. Since there was only one final design that we have to choose initially, before applying colors to the design. I had to experiment with what kind of relevant elements I can add to fill in the spaces a little bit more because it seems as if there need to be spaces to be occupied.
 |
Figure 1.1.6 - a refinement to sketch #2 and #6, June 8th, 2021 |
Remembering Mr. Vinod mentioning to bold the font that I was using and it looked much better, maybe because it occupies most of the space in the artboard, but I didn't want it to seem too bland to I threw in a few italic alternatives to the texts and see if kerning the glyphs would make it look neater as well and it works.

Figure 1.1.7 - Black and White Sketch, June 8th, 2021 |
|
After a few observations on the other sketches, I decided to settle on Sketch 2a because I feel it's the most simple but with potential expression. I feel like the bolded text adds to it along with the exclamation symbol.
Further refinement:

Figure 1.1.7 - further experimentation, June 15th, 2021 |
|
I did few more alternative positions of the words but mainly fixed the distance between the letters in the word 'pride'. With all the amendments. Mr. Vinod finally assisted with a few more tweaks and approved the digitized black and white sketch below:

Color implementation:
Next was adding color, deciding on what color would fit the expression and the celebration. Adding a container or a border to add more of a decoration to the sticker is compulsory.
 |
Figure 1.1.8 - Color implementations, June 8th, 2021
|
Implementing the colors was a little tricky since I had the idea of having the border to the texts as a flag but it happened to overflow from the texts. The other idea was to mask the colors of the pride flag onto the texts. (The colors above were scraps before developing from Mr. Vinod's Feedbacks)
Color implementations (refined):
 |
Figure 1.1.9 - Sticker stroke, June 18th, 2021 |
I started off by clipping a rainbow-colored flag onto the stroke of the text and adding in a sticker-like layer to contain the elements as one.
 |
Figure 1.2.1 - Sticker layout, June 18th, 2021 |
Next was figuring out what color should initially go good with a rainbow stroked 'pride' text. I thought that adding the container of the sticker's stroke yellow would add some contrast to it but not exactly a final decision.
 |
Figure 1.2.2 - Experimentation on contrast, June 18th, 2021 |
I decided on having the texts be in white color since it contrasts really well with the rainbow strokes and the background to contain the text is black since it makes the text pop out more.
Final Outcome:

Pdf Version:
After finalizing the following, it was time to attempt to use the sticker on Telegram. Firstly uploading the sticker onto Telegram is through a Bot on Telegram.

Feedback
General Feedback
[June 8th, 2021 (Week 11)]
-
Sketches for typographical stickers were too distorted on the celebration 'Happy pride month.' Although one idea out of 5 rough sketches was acceptable and acknowledged to further progress idea on that. After a while of implementing the following sketch into illustrator, got feedback that 2 out of 6 digitalized sketch was to be further developed.
General Feedback
[June 15th, 2021 (Week 12)]
-
Finalized digital sketch was given feedback of the typographical track and kerning for the work 'Pride' was too far apart. Other word placements, as well as elements, were not quite presentable yet. After few improvements on the symbol heart, the b&w digitized skecth was approved and can be moved onto colorizing.
General Feedback
[June 22nd, 2021 (Week 13)]

The sticker was lacking the white outline that is instructed to have a final piece into the typographical final design of our stickers. Did a few tweaks on it and added the following and finalising the submission.
Reflection

I was able to reflect on how typographical designing isn't very easy, but once I understood that when designing it's always good to find ways to take up white space on the canvas with glyphs/words/ or sentences. Also making sure that when designing has similar correlations to the typefaces or the word expression so it won't seem out of place. Other than that, When designing with words, readability is important typographical designing involves small sizes, and how when designing with words it isn't necessary to add a lot of elements unless it's really necessary. Overall, there just should be a smart way in designing expressive words or celebrations when it comes to typography put into it.

Figure 1.3.2 - 'On Web Typography' book cover By Jason Santa Maria |
On Web Typography
By Jason Santa Maria 2014The book by designer Jason Santa Maria is one the shortest, but one of a favorable, typography book. It offers a good picture of the fundamentals and also has unique ideas. The' How we read' segment is especially good and may be read online for free. This book may be of good use to any web designer in the progress of creating webs for a short book that is easy to read, yet still covers a lot of ground when getting to know about typography (web aspect specifically).
