Project 3
Motion Graphics Animation

Our 3rd project for information design was more of a group project. Our group being 'Group 7' consisted of;
- Lui Hsiao Hui (Tressa)
- Lim Jia Sheng
- Rusydina Fazlin Athirah Binti Fauzi (Me)
- Imran Firdaus Johan Jason Firdaus
- Chaw Zhi Ting (Janice)
- Dorcas Lim Jie Shi
- Honoka Hata
Our first assigned task from Mr. Martin was to pick out one part out of two on pre-recorded voice-overs. As seen in the google sheet below:
With the task given, we had our first group meeting and decided to go with the 2nd part of the voice-over script (family planning), and our group delegated tasks where we planned out each line in the script with start out sketches as visuals to, later on, designed into style frame that will be animated.
Members that worked on planning out visualizations to be sketched out:
- Jia Sheng
- Imran
- Janice
- Dorca
Members in-charge of start out sketches:
- Athirah (me)
- Tressa
The google sheet below would be a more prime example of the dissecting of lines in the script that pan out to storyboard sketches and later on in style frames and so on.
Prepared by Dorcas, she was assigned the task of transferring all the information above into slides along with the sketches, that acts as our storyboard as we progress into this project together:
Here is a link to our group's google drive folder of only the storyboard sketches:
There was a moment, where our group had a discussion and went over different animation styles to use for when we finally design the frames that will be animated.

Group members, Jia Sheng, Tressa, Janice, Dorcas, and Imran did a few explorations on their own in suggesting animation styles that could work well and be referenced off as our animation style when we start animating the frames.
After we've decided on our animation style, all the group members went through different sources (ex. Pinterest, Instagram, etc) to look for similar animation styles as seen in 'style suggestion 1' which was the animation style our group decided on going for. The moldboard can be seen below:

With the animation style all set in, that's when 3 members of the group took up the role of working out a chosen sketch to be turned into a style frame to start out:
That role of illustrating the first few sketches was:
- Athirah (Me)
- Janice
- Imran
With the assigned task delegated by our group leader and assistant, Tressa & Jia Sheng, the illustrators went our separate ways momentarily to work on the illustrators of our chosen sketches. After each of us has completed our illustrations-
Janice prepared a slide for us illustrators to implement our illustrations with the chosen sketches, for a better view of it, see below:
As we sketched out and planned out our visuals to later then be turned into style frames, our group had to go through its consultations and changes would already start from there. There were a few changes in sketches before finalizing each frame.
Improved & amended sketches along with style frames (google sheet):
The google sheet above displays one of the tasks assigned by Mr. Martin where we had to dissect the time duration between each frame that we've decided and finalized the visual on it. For a moment our group was on track and a little too fast in completing tasks even before Mr. Martin gave them.
But that didn't stop us from going further even more, once our frames were consulted and mostly approved by Mr. Martin, our next task was to make an animatic with the storyboard sketches that were already sketched out by me and Tressa.
Storyboard animatic edited by Tressa:
Once we had our animatic down and got through consultation with Mr. Martin and Ms. Anis, we progressed into the final illustration of each of the sketches, also having the idea of how our animation will pan out in final production.
Now, it was time to start illustrating and animating, our group had our final discussion, and our group leader, Jia Sheng delegated roles for each of us on who would work on illustrating and animating
Illustration team:
We sort of used a mentor-mentee way where each of us can look out for each other when working on our illustrations since there were some that struggled with the medium.
mentor-mentee
- Janice → Honoka Hata
- Athirah → Imran
- Dorcas
but overall, the names mentioned are a part of the illustration teams.
Aniamtion team:
- Tressa
- Jia Sheng
After figuring out who's roles were who's, it was time to get to grinding and completing our illustrations. On my end, I'll be showcasing the original frames that illustrated which were frames 26 - 29.
Here are the original frames are done by the rest of the illustration team members on google drive:
Though even with all the frames completed, they had to go through Tressa and Jia Sheng where they later then revamped and enhanced each frame illustrated, giving it a much finer look.
The changes in certain frames can be seen in the short clip animation done by Jia Sheng and Tressa below:
With the start-out animation seen above, it got consulted through by Mr. Martin and we got feedback, saying that we've got all things on track just needed to add in a few sound effects to finish it off.
A slide prepared by Tressa of all the frames revamped for a better view:
After a few tweaks, the animators worked their heads off in completing the final parts of our project. Low and behold it was finally completed with the full length of the motion graphic animation video on Sex Education - Family Planning.

To finish off, here are Group 7's roles and tasks (prepared by group assistant, Tressa.)
Reflection

Working in a group was one of the first things I noticed was going to be the highlight of this semester's module. It didn't have any changes, in my personal feeling. Because I've known a few of the people I was grouped with. Mostly familiar names. But that's beside the point, there were a few moments where my group and myself faced certain difficulties towards the end of completing our group project. But that's also beside the point.
I'd like to say that personally I've learned a lot in observing how my group worked, it was intriguing to be able to be up close in certain ways people carry out their tasks. Of course, putting in what I can to contribute, it was still quite pressuring to work with the people I had in my group. Understanding they have their own difficulties at times too, but they still pushed through and I definitely was surprised and took it in a way where I was somewhat enlightened with the way they worked. It might have seemed as if I only stood in the back and only had them do the work with me explaining this. But I did what I did to contribute to this group with really talented people, everyone genuinely.
I would like to say as well that I did a good job in helping, maybe each member focused on their parts and tasks to contribute were checking up on other teammates was a minor, but I see that at times some of us do our best to reach out and I'm glad that a doing as small as that can still be noticed.
