Task 2
Data Collection (Field Study)January 30th, 2022-
Continuing into our Drag Journey for my group, the next task that my group was assigned to carry out was to collect data for our research. The whole class had a short brief with our supervisor Mr. Vinod who kindly elaborated and answered queries for us to better understand our next assignment; Data Collection.
our requirements for data collection are to:
- to collect visual, aural, textual, and tactile artefacts (being a part of our research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal)
- collected artefacts and materials must be recorded, kept, and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the
- type of artefact and material
- its purpose
- its symbolism
- it's cultural/historical background
- depending on the kind of artefact and material.
Right after the brief, my group had a brief discussion to delegate the tasks amongst the members of the group, to quickly start out our second task. Jia Sheng and Tressa, the group leader and assistant of the group listed out each member's tasks to carry out before the due date of this task.
task delegations by group leader:
the main thing that our group did, was to carry out online research and most possibly an interview. below is mainly an envisioned delegation into topics of research for each member:
- Qian Tong — Google Arts & Culture on the 3 weapons
- eg. links
- Yi Yun — Suppression/rebellion of drag
- Video research
- eg. links
- Netnography
- Jia Sheng & Tressa — The history of homophobic persecution in the countries of the 3 weapons
- Athirah (me) — The significance of each weapon to their country
- Interview for a person who practices drag in one of the countries of the 3 weapons
- Jo & Jia Sheng — Creating the questions
- Tressa — Finding & requesting an interview
- Field Study
- Jia Sheng — Going somewhere & taking actual pictures of keris or smtg
When the delegation of tasks was all out, each member soared into their own research including me.
The significance of each weapon to their country
My contribution to my group starts off with the significance of the 3 traditional weapons to their country, which is the:
- Saintie (Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan)
- Keris (Brunei, Indonesia)
- Jambiya (Saudi Arabia, Yemen)
Finding the significance of these weapons is just as important since our final visual/physical outcome to our project is to re-decorate these weapons with the many symbolistic trinkets/objects/colors put all together to be seen as drag. It would make more sense once everyone's research is to be put together, being that mine is only a part in the middle of this whole research data collecting.
Anyway! Going into the research of my group task, 3 weapons was quite a lot to find out about. Therefore, making sure to capture each weapon's significance, I split sub-topics to put into explaining or elaborating each traditional weapon.
that being (sub-topics):
- what is the (weapon)
- functions of the (weapon)
- form & characteristics of the (weapon)
- Historical remarks of the (weapon)
additional findings:
- Yemeni Jambiya's difference and significance from other Jambiyas
- structure & make
- significance of Yemeni men’s status when handling Jambiyas
- distinguished men
- the etymology of the keris
- magical powers of the keris (cultural beliefs)
- forging a keris with magical spiritual rituals
Once I split the sub-topics, it was much easier to identify which information for each traditional weapon to be put into its sub-topic. Writing a short synopsis to explain the importance of why there even is a traditional weapon for each/certain country.
Synopsis
The significance of a weapon in its country, preferably traditional weaponry in certain countries. Essentially any armaments that can be wielded is to try to provide and symbolize the history, culture of the country, belief and even having ceremonial tribal importance with its vast range of designs or unique characteristics of distinct arms of historical or regional significance, these traditional weapons stand out from the normal “modern” firearms. Although, each and every armament has its significance throughout the world.
Most of the information that I found online was put into a word document and in point form, to look through it much more conveniently when putting all the data with everyone else. Other than that, a few visuals to assist the explanations for each weapon in their sub-topics.

Data accumulation (into slides)
January 31st, 2022
-
Later into the week, Tressa had already started to prepare the slides where everyone will be putting their tasked research into the slides.
Mr. Asrizal also had a brief session on our second task; Data Collection on where and how to submit it. There was also a shift in the deadlines (new deadline February 7th, 2022) due to public holidays, so there were a few days for our group to finish up the slides and enough time to record our presentation and edit all the clips together.
In assumptions, there was a word document that accumulated all the information to better plan out the slides as seen below:
Slide presentation compilation, miro board compilation, and video presentation
Low and behold, there was enough time to squeeze into the last day of recording and editing our presentation before its due date.
Our group accumulated, our findings and inserted information and visuals into a miro board prepared by Jia Sheng, our group leader: https://miro.com/app/board/uXjVORChWeU=/?invite_link_id=336517679713
Our slides come into two because the original slide had many important points that we were afraid won't fit into one whole 10-11 minute video. One is the full slides to our data collection and the other is a summarised version that we used for our pre-recorded video presentation.

Specific Feedback
Demonstrates excellent observational and research skills, evident in an abundant collection of various materials, using appropriate tools. Documentation of collected materials is written clearly with effective written communication skills, clearly reviewing the contents of the sources. I am happy to see the RQ-RO in the beginning, well done there. It would also be good to mention in the conclusion how the data collected answered the RQ and fulfilled the RO and what will be the implications of the knowledge gained in your design output.
