Lectures (Assignment 2)

Week 8 - The complete publication design

Completion of the research dissertation. comes its visual design

May 18th, 2022

The commencement of the second assignment was initially meant to be covered on the 7th week, but due to a hectic week after public holidays, flowing back into assignments took its slow pace. The post in google classroom was later publicized on the 8th week, where working on a mood board was one of the requirements to kick start the second assignment.

When completing the dissertation, a design for your journal article (dissertation) is to be thought out.

Dr. Hayati provided a few references, guides, and basics for knowing and understanding how to start this particular task. As seen in the slides above.

Students were meant to re-read their dissertation copy to better understand the topic that will be designed through the assignment process. Examining the pages is one of the important parts to carry out as well, later the falling into preparing your templates; that's when accumulating references or contents for a mood board begins.

A simpler way to put it:

Read the copy
  • Manuscript Preparation
  • Editing
  • Pagination
  • ISBN (International Standard Book Number)
  • Cover design
  • Ready For Press

  • Visually design pages for each section of the dissertation
Week 10:

  • first thing to work on,

    • familiarize oneself to InDesign once again

    • begin determining a layout for heading and body text in each page (making sure each concept art can be implemented)

  • Apply concept arts/illustrations onto pages

    • interrelate the concept art to the relevance of what the page or topic/sub-topic of the page is elaborating.

Week 11:

  • Since I was still starting out my design process, I didn’t get to show Dr. Hayati my progress.

  • I started off with labeling my pages and finding a layout through other books and novels as reference

  • Start progressing into completing the visual design for each page section.

  • Rephrased titles:

    • 1. The possible benefits of 3D animation overtaking 2D animation in the entertainment industry.

Week 9 - Feedback

Specific remark:
Unfortunately, Dr. Hayati was on Medical leave. No Remarks were given.

Week 10 - Feedback

Specific remark:
draft dissertation title needs to be rephrased
numeral number pages only have to be placed on the cover and content pages
the rest of the pages can be non-numeral numbers
concept art and illustrations for journal article pages have to make sure it has consent from the artist
-or search for free copyrighted illustrations/concept arts
interrelate appendices with section 4 of the dissertation

General remark:
design-wise for visual journal article pages, the reader should know what to expect in upcoming pages
page designs can interrelate

Week 11 - Feedback

Specific remark:

No specific remarks since I hadn’t had materials prepared for specific feedback from Dr. Hayati.

General remark:

  • Fulfill the concept, and trend of design, utilizing the sensitivity of fonts and typography in the layout.

  • Exploit the design into getting the 20% of points in this assignment. (one way to be motivated into a critical and recent visual design).

  • Each section of the dissertation should have its identity of correlating with the visual design of the journal

Tasks for week 12 (June 15th): [Submission Week]

  • Progress into completing 80% of visual design for pages

  • Since it is the final week of outgoing this assignment pages should be secured with all information from the dissertation draft with a completed visual for each page (front to back cover)

    • To be submitted before carrying out the final assignment.

Week 12 - Feedback

Specific remark:

  • Being cautious of text, body texts, or sub headers aligning across the creasing line (to meet with visual design ideas) of the pages do not meet any errors if it were to be printed physically

    • other than that, a spread design on pages is not restricted (attempt to prevent text lining across the creasing line of pages.

  • A dynamic type of design has been able to be visible within my dissertation journal visual design

    • although reverse text (/colors) could be a little exhausting for readers to read. (consider overcoming the issue)

    • consider body texts to be in columns
