Week 4 - Project 1
Technical & Motion Graphics Sensibilities
September 19th, 2022
To start off the first project, the following brief as seen below are the requirements to be met up with to complete this project.
Project 1, Brief:
1. Symmetry, focus, scale & rhythm motion graphics
The first project in motion graphics and compositing is understanding the multiple principles in design regarding compositions that consist of it and attempts for us to animate those principles.
There are a total of 8 compositions that regards the principles of design:
- movement
- hierarchy
- balance
- direction
- symmetry
- focus
- scale
- rhythm
As seen below is a template prepared by Mr. Fauzi to forgo our first project and the first row of compositions is already prepared by Mr. Fauzi as well. But the bottom row is the part of the project, we are meant to make up our own compositions following the title of it and along with learning and understanding the keyframes that were done by Mr. Fauzi.

a. Symmetry
I worked on the symmetry composition first, it took definitely took a while to understand and replace the keyframes and editing of the layers that were done by Mr. Fauzi, but in the end, I manage to add in my kind of composition along with Mr. Fauzi's composition.
Figure 1.1 - Symmetry composition, September 25th, 2022 |
The kind of effects implemented in this composition was masking and rotation. The composition of symmetry is to have an anchor point of elements that meet up or end up being in the middle of the canvas.

b. Focus
The next composition I worked on was the Focus principle, I did the same as utilizing Mr. Fauzi's composition and substituting the lines into pointy triangles that scale out of the canvas according to the scale of the dot in the middle of the canvas.
Figure 1.3 - Focus composition, September 25th, 2022 |
It took me a while to find a way to exchange the lines of the dot into triangles, therefore I took the triangles from the symmetry composition and implemented them into the focus composition, and just scaled it according to my liking.
By utilizing the transforms presets in after effects I parented the transformations to a null object layer to achieve the rotation and scale transformation of the pointy triangles

c. Scale
The second to last composition that I had to work on was scale, I simply just rotated the squares into a diamond shape and shifted the keyframes to change the timing of the scales.

I wanted to add a few more diamonds to the outer canvas of the composition but I decided not to and kept with the composition I already had.

d. Rhythm
The final composition that I had to work on was rhythm, when it came to rhythm I had an initial idea to create the video tutorial below. I thought it was a perfect rhythmic composition to apply to this project.
The tutorial above was just a perfect demonstration to help out with the idea I had for this composition, it had the simple effects of scaling the image of a heart along with timing (which is shifting the layer before and/or after an initial layer).
Figure 1.7 - Rhythm, September composition (still image), September 25th, 2022 |
As seen in my attempt above, I did according to what the video tutorial taught me, for the rhythmic part of the composition.
First attempt rhythm composition outcome (still image):
Figure 1.8 - rhythm, composition (still image), September 25th, 2022 |
After seeking Mr. Fauzi's feedback he suggested that the heart could be a more blocky look to it since the other compositions are more block-like in appearance, the round edges of the heart somewhat take away the unity when the compositions are to be merged with each other in the final composition.
-another thing that was told to change for submissions was the color of the heart, grayscale was acceptable to add in different shades to the heart.
Improvements (rhythm composition):
Figure 1.9 - Rhythm altered shape, September composition, October 8th, 2022 |
It was nothing but a simple fix to it, by adding in the shape layer and using the pen tool to make the heart have a more blocky appeal rather than curvy, and I just applied the same methods and technique from the tutorial video that I watched.

Composition Remix
After making up 4 more compositions out of the 8 principles of design, it was now time for the second part of the project where we would remix these compositions to create a composition out of it, a brand new one.
-with the template that was also provided and prepared by Mr. Fauzi, I only had to find ways to implement music to this composition to sync the rhythm with, as well as make sure that there are interesting sequences to the composition too!
Figure 1.11 - Remix, composition (progress), October 8th, 2022 |
Figure 1.12 - Remix, composition (progress #2), October 8th, 2022 |
There were a few adjustments that I made with each component of the previous design principles that were prepared and altered by me. To be able to sync up to the audio/music that was chosen, it had its simplicity to it but towards the end of the composition I wanted to emphasize the rhythm composition with the music and did so.

October 8th, 2022
During the first project, I was able to utilize the practices that I had in classes with the physical collage along with the digital collage assigned by Mr. Fauzi. It was a good practice and understanding leading up to this project.
I'm aware there is still a lot of practice to carry out to make what I feel my compositions that aren't as good to be better and better as I progress. I start to find myself watching more and more videos that co-relates to motion graphics to get more insights and understand the timings on it too. As well as figuring it out, "Hmm, I wonder what that particular keyframe would look like?"
This project has also definitely helped me out in being a little more well-versed in after effects, I genuinely cannot wait to try out what I can do next in adobe after effects!
