Channel Bumper
September 26th, 2022
To start off the second project, the following brief as seen below are the requirements to be met up with to complete this project.
Project 2, Brief:
DESCRIPTION:
Students will synthesize the knowledge gained in Task 1 for application in Task 2.
Students are to demonstrate the ability to explore and generate an abstract channel bumper in any creative approach considering good audio tempo and visually compelling video.
REQUIREMENTS:
Students are to use the information for any proposed channel (*existing or fictional)
create a mood board that reflects their concept/idea style-guide that conveys the final look and feel
storyboard animatics explore appropriate audio to uplift the motion tempo
Students will start with sketches and test various conceptual ideas through digitization using the appropriate software. Students conclude by selecting and presenting their personal design interpretation in the instructed format/s.
SUBMISSION:
Compiled and present your progress in Slide
(*mood board, style guide, sketches, storyboard, technical processes as posted in e-portfolio).
Final output will include a 10 – 15 sec video (*.mp4, h2.64, 16:9 - 1920 X 1080, 25 fps, ACC, 48kHz, uploaded to YouTube channel).

Proposal
In the 5th week, we started off this project with a proposal of moldboard and ideas on approaching the kind of brand that we would want to forego in this channel bumper. Too late then presented to Mr. Fauzi in the 6th week.
My proposal consists of a video back in 2017, titled "In the woods". As seen below in the slides, a more vivid understanding of my idea can be depicted with my further explanations along with Mr. Fauzi's feedback and assistance in progressing through this project of creating my channel bumper for this game.
Project 2 - Channel Bumper (Proposal):
Mr. Fauzi's feedback & Suggestions:
- Progress with the animated-like style for the project
- sketchy-like art style to act as my own artwork for the project
- Remix between your own work and other works (just make sure to give credit to other artist's works)
- At the end of the day, the project is meant to be a remix of my own works with reusable works from multiple artists or designs.
- To be pieced together.
Progress #1 - Planning:
I started off with the kind of music/audio that will complement the animation/motion graphics that will be in the final production. There were a few audios that I wanted to utilize, it went from a scale of an upbeat tone to a more mysterious tone to it since it would fit the atmosphere of the game better.
Therefore I used the soundtrack from the actual game to fit into my channel bumper, all audio used from the game OST is for educational purposes only.
I had two choices which were the video soundtracks that can be seen below:
2. Unknowable by Night in the Woods (OST)
I decided on the 2nd audio for the animated channel bumper that I'll be making. There was a movement where I kept going back and forth on the two OSTs above to be an individual channel bumper.
If we proceed into 'Progress #1a', we can see that I sketched out 2 storyboards, to see which audio would fit the two visual ideas I had.
Progress #1a - Storyboarding:
I had two ideas for these two separate audios and the reason why I sketched out two storyboards was to see how much I can put into when it comes to the first audio and the second one based on my visual ideas.
Storyboard #1
For the first storyboard, it was meant to have a more uplifting and "is this the end" feeling to it, whereas editing wise I would have the actual game trailer be played in the background of my animation of the main character laying down on the grass, depicting that she is stargazing.
The camera slowly pans to the right to showcase Mae's friends laying on the grass along with her as they point up at the night sky from a top perspective.
Later zoomed into Mae's face quickly transitioning upwards as the logo of the game is displayed as it is framed with tree branches and a constellation star-filled sky in the background.
I went back and forth between sketches and kept attempting to fit the storyboard to the song's pacing.
Storyboard #2
After a while of debating between these two audio OSTs, I went in on sketching more of the second storyboard, I was much more appalled by the second storyboard. It feels much more like what the game "Night in the Woods" has to offer a majority of the time. It has an eerie and suspenseful feel to it being visually designed with cute woodland animals and vector-like soft-tone colors.
Therefore I went with finalizing the storyboard and sketched out the thumbnails to work into coloring in the scenes for it to be animated in After Effects.
Progress #2 - Sketching (character):
Before sketching out the character and deciding on the colors, I accumulated all contents from the game that would be relevant to my design and portrayal of the game's channel bumper into a mood board.
I then experimented with the brushes in photoshop to activate that kind of scratchy art style when drawing out the character as seen below.
I progressed into sketching out each scene on its individual artboard in photoshop based on the second storyboard.
Once I completed the sketches, each scene below would be played out in the channel bumper, once its finished.
Once the sketches were done, it was time to color in the sketches:
It was an easy and simple process when coloring in the scenes, I also made sure that it was similar to the in-game environment (level) on the far left of the photoshop canvas.
Once I was finished the completed shots were separated into layers to make it easier to edit the elements in After Effects.
Progress #3 - Animating (character):
Animating the each of the scenes was a simple as I can elaborate it, during drawing and coloring out the scenes in Photoshop, I made sure that each element that I wanted to add motion to it had to be a separate layer.
Therefore when it is added into after effects it acts as an object where we can alter its movements.
I did the following all the way until the last scene (scene 4), I only added in simple movements according to how I imagined it would be from storyboard > sketches > final production.
Progress #4 - Animating (Motion Graphics):
When it comes to the simpler elements like texts or the game's logo, I started off with the games logo, from a PNG image implemented into Adobe Illustrator I image traced > expand and saved the file, implementing it into after effects.
I wanted the text to glow from behind the game text logo, so I worked with effects and presets already provided in After Effects and messed around until I was satisfied with how I want it to turn out.
I changed the text colors to white as well through the glow effect, as a close reference from the actual game trailer when they display the logo at the end of the trailer.
The next effect that I worked on was the text quoted at the end of the animation, I wanted to implement a glitch kind of effect, so I followed the tutorial seen below to achieve this effect and it turned out the way I wanted to.
Once it was completed the final outcome of it can be seen below.

REFLECTION

October 17th, 2022
For the second project into motion graphics and compositing, I was quite clueless when given the freedom to choose anything that we're passionate about to put into a channel bumper. But I managed to narrow down what I like in a way that's manageable for me.
I got to understand more about what after effects offers in terms of motion graphics and editing style, it was so much fun to be able to work out a composition and it works out in the end. Although I had to scroll through many tutorials to help in what I wanted to add to the composition.
Then again I still used up the basics of motion graphics that Mr. Fauzi has been teaching us, I know I can improve so much more on this particular project of brand chosen since I started off with two ideas for a storyboard, perhaps I can utilize that remaining idea in my free time for my personal projects to see it come to life!
