Week 2 - Audio storyline

Brainstorming plot lines within an audio story

September 6th, 2022

The second week was already the start of forming a story that revolves around sound, there are a variety of sound combinations that can be chosen for assistance in making up the story.

The choice scenario is:

  1. Wildlife + Background
  2. Everyday Home Life + Background
  3. Cities + Transport + Exterior Atmosphere
  4. Industry and Electronic sounds + Background
  5. Weather + Background
  6. Market + Rural atmosphere + Background
-with what can be chosen above my initial thought of a story idea where a man gets chased by a tiger. It captures the first choice scenario, ' Wildlife + background' although Mr. Razif mentioned how we can combine multiple choice scenarios as long as it makes a story.

Initial Idea of the audio story:

The main scenario is chosen: Wildlife +Background

A man that finds himself in a jungle, he wakes up in a panic he is surrounded by nothing but nature and wildlife. Rustling can be heard from a distance, the wrap sound changes as he looks around feeling as if he is being stalked. The man breaths heavier as he slowly stands up shuffling through the leaf-filled forest floor, unknowingly he steps on a twig breaking it.

"GROWL", a tiger leaped out of the bushes, forcing the man to fall to his side. THUD! He landed in the pile of leaves, relieved that he dodged the tiger's attack.

Audio Identification (based on the written storyline):

Main Focus:

  • Surprise ✅
  • Shocked (wake up) ✅
  • Heavy breathing ✅
  • Growling (Stalking growl) ✅
  • Leaf shuffling ✅
  • Slow breathing ✅
  • Slow footsteps (animal) ✅
  • Louder growl ✅
  • Surprised/shocked ✅
  • Stick breaking ✅
  • Roar ✅
  • Leaf pile impact ✅
  • Man grunting ✅

Background:

  • Wildlife ✅
  • Birds chirping ✅
  • The wind rustling through tree branches/leaves
The paragraphs above were only drafts of the initial plot of the story that was approved by Mr. Raziff although he did recommend adding more to it to make sure that the character does not die in the end.

Week 3 - Audio storyline

Feedbacks and updates

September 6th, 2022

In the 3rd week after gathering and accumulating as well as layering each of the sound effects that were downloaded, I ended up with the display seen below.

Figure 1.1 - Audio layering, September 12th, 2022

-it was also enough to forego the idea to Mr. Razif during class. He did acknowledge how the sound and idea are going in the right direction although the heavy breathing that consisted of the story needed to be dropped, therefore I tried to alter the story from the begging all the way to the end.

There were a few ideas in mind, but executing them through audio would be challenging. But with the feedback and suggestions that Mr. Razif gave, ideas of water running would be a fine addition to it.

Additional plots (enhanced storyline):

  • Guy gets lost in the woods (looks through the map)
  • He walks through the woods anyway to try to find a way out
  • He feels cautious and paranoid about his surroundings
  • He still attempts to find a way back to the trail while taking in the scenic view of the woods
  • Starts to hear growling -> gets attacked -> runs
    • He runs through the forest, hitting through the leaves and tree branches.
  • Footsteps vary through the multiple terrains he steps on (including water)
  • Finally flees the tiger by making his way to a campsite
    • sound of chattering, campfires, guitars
After finding a way to narrow down the story and hopefully manage to execute it through audio, I just need to find certain sound effects that can be a part of the enhanced storyline listed above.

-and of course, repeating the process of layering the audio and adding in the many factors of lessons that were throughout the weeks of sonic design.

Week 4 - Week 6 - Audio storyline

More audio layering

September 20th, 27th, and 4th, 2022

Throughout the next few weeks before submission, I continued to finalize the audio track. The plot of the story kept changing in between because it was quite challenging when looking for the right kind of sound effects.

Therefore, I decided on the protagonist in the audio story to scare off the tiger with a torch, a lighter that he already has, and a branch that he broke off from the tree.

Figure 1.2 - Audio tuning, October 11th, 2022

There were only a few fine-tuning that I applied to certain sound effects, I mostly utilized a lot of the volume and panning presets of the audio.

Once I was satisfied with how the audio story turned out, a guide to submitting the audio files was shared by Mr. Razif, it can be seen below for easy reference:

Along with a google drive folder, where the required audio files for submissions will be submitted into.

Other than that, the final outcome of the story can be listened to below:
