[Breif explanation on starting Project 2 -Decisive Moment]
May 7th, 2021
-
For this week's class, there were no lectures although it was the start of our new exercises a.k.a project 2. The project is dissected into two parts: making a poster based on the decisive moment of the story chosen and an animated looped gif. All to be submitted on the 9th week.
[Project 2, Decisive Moment, Module]
Project 2 [Desisive Moment!]
May 7th, 2021 (Week 6)
-
Diving into the first part of the project, the class was assigned to make up a poster that leads into the second part of the project (where the animating part begins). During this week's class, there was a small session where the class had half an hour to ideate on a decisive moment from a movie, storybook, games, show to start off with progress.
I had the idea of a decisive moment from a console game back in 2016 called 'The Last Guardian'. (Play the video below at the timestamp 0:24 as a close reference to my idea of creating the poster for the exercise!)
Moodboard:

I just accumulated a few artworks here and there from google and through Pinterest, I also did my best to find similar concept arts from the game that reflected the video that was implemented in the blog above as reference.
I came up with this during the half-hour in class on deciding which decisive moment the class desired to carry out. After the time was up, it was time to present, the feedback I received from Ms. Anis was an approved decision of the reference I had in favor.
Ms. Anis also helped on ideating the decisive scene of the boy and the beast working together in the gif to make sure it has a loop effect and not have it cut off in the final 'cut'.
But before that, we were assigned to come up with posters that have a close resemblance to the animated gif.
Poster Sketches:

Figure 1.1.2 - Sketch #1, May 15th, 2021 |
When starting out the sketch, I simply traced over a concept art of the game just to plan out the idea of how much I want it to be similar or have a little bit of difference when animating it. To also keep in mind, there I a set width and length that the animated gif had to be in; either it'd be in landscape or portrait (800 x 600 / 800 x 600 px).

Figure 1.1.3 - Sketch #2, May 15th, 2021 |
For the second sketch, I added a little more elements to it and a more accurate action in the representation of a decisive moment. Where the boy was being chased by the magical ancient guard and directing the action of the boy jumping and grasping onto the beast's tail.

Figure 1.1.4 - Sketch #3, May 15th, 2021 |
For this sketch, I just messed around with the scale of the subjects in the sketch, like how the distance from the boy and the beast is a little greater than the previous sketches. Adding to that, it can also act as a beforehand planning of how the animated gif can play its part as a reference.
Poster Progression:
I started off with sketching out the running action of the boy before vectoring him in adobe illustrator since the sketch didn't exactly have visible lines.

Later then, I fit the boy into the bigger sketch and continue working from then on.
Figure 1.1.8 - Background progression, May 15th, 2021 |
As you can see the poster is starting to come together along with the background and a few subjects that need to be implemented into the piece. I was also thinking of changing up the kind of texture that the platform had into something more subtle and closely related to the whole theme of 'The Last Guardian.

In this progression, we can finally see Trico in the scene, I also added some more subtle kinds of textures provided by adobe illustrator and some shading to make it look even more subtle.

NOTE! I noticed I misspelled 'Guardian', so I made sure it was the right spelling in the final outcome (whoops) |

Gif Animation:
After finalizing the poster, it's time to attempt a gif animation that closely resembles the poster. It also acts as an easy reference.
Figure 1.2.3 - reference amendment, May 16th, 2021 |
The image shown above will act as a template to animate Trico's tail flicking as the animated gif. I as well added in a few more elements like the guards and how I made the platform a little wider to add in the guards chasing after the boy. Another thing I added was that I scaled down the sizes of the subject to appear like there is a distance from the boy to the beast.

The final outcome for the gif has its doubts to it, but I'm still pretty proud of how it turned out. I can say it was quite a journey in learning a lot about adobe illustrator and a little bit of exploration in after effects. I'm very aware that it still needs a few more studies and a few more explorations to have it in its better form.
Reflection:

What I was able to reflect on this project was the amount of time it takes and exploring along with patience. It was a good way, personally, to learn how to take time on a certain piece and putting it all we can into it. I'm still familiarizing myself with animation but it was really cool to be able to achieve the final outcome shown above with the capacities and abilities I put into it, even as a beginner or someone that doesn't have many experiences with animating!
Though it doesn't mean I'm going to stop here, I feel like I will be able to make it look better and smoother with as much practice and experiences, time, and patience but overall it was fun and interesting to look back on all the decisive moments to put into works to create a poster and a gif animation to it!
