Stop-motion Videos Review
1. Lilly Allen | Somewhere Only We Know (John Lewis Christmas Advert)
This first stop motion video review is a music video, reason, why I favor this video, is because of the song in it. It tells a story while the song is being played and covered by Lilly Allen (originally sang by Keane). The effort put into the storytelling of this stop motion is heart-felt and simply just fits the calming vocals to the song being sung. The video, it shows the progress of the people working, sketching, and storyboarding the characters in stop-motion.
Other than that, the style of this stop motion is much more advanced in my opinion. There was a lot of frame-by-frame hand-drawn of the characters and having to be cut out to film each frame for stop motioning, which takes a lot of time needed to make. But in the end results, it looks as if it's more animated instead of a stop motion which can be very impressive.
2. Coraline Opening Scene 1080p HD (2009)
The next video is one of the classic and well know movies for stop motion; Coraline. I have watched many 'in the making' videos of this movie a long time ago being I was very obsessed with this movie. The style that was adopted by very talented directors, producers, and artists that worked on this project had a creepy and eerie feel to it which fit the movie perfectly since the direction of how the characters looked like have clay-like and realistic figurines look to it. Knowing that it all was a frame-by-frame stop motion work but the final outcome of the movie would seem like it was computer-generated.
But believe it or not, it was definitely worked on traditional with each image of the character's movement taken each time. It also takes a lot of time to finalize, although if it were a style I were to use in the project it could possibly be simplified on the movements.
3. The Ultimate Parkour - Ryan Higa
Lastly, I'd like to bring forth one of my favorite artistic youtube influencers, Ryan Higa. His crew and he make entertaining relatable funny videos in many different kinds of styles. It either being in animation form, stop motion or even just film post-production based. It's a very entertaining way to learn and be fascinated by the videos he makes, and if you're really interested in knowing more about how most of these videos are made he has a channel (HigaTV) where he uploads bloopers and processes of the video which can also be entertaining.
The style he went for in the video has some relation to the first video I reviewed but it's much more simplified and feels a little easier to reference it off of. The character and the storyline to this video are Ryan being asked by his audience if he could carry out parkour, instead of actually doing it. He implemented a storyline to it and completely changed the idea of parkour into something so much more creative utilizing his working space (room) with little cut-outs of himself.

Stop-motion Story proposal
During Independence week Mr. Martin had put up a post in google classroom, mentioning our story proposal on our final project; Stop-motion.
He entitled a theme that emphasizes 'Social Issues', with that it was up to me to choose the kind of social issue I will be presenting in my stop motion video.
Stop-Motion Story Proposal-October 14th
Before we started on shooting our final project, Mr. Martin acknowledged how it is important to have a story to tell when starting out the first few of starting the stop-motion animation.
Therefore, we did the respective of what the story is, making a shotlist of the scenes that will play out what the story is and of course a storyboard.
Stop-motion Test Shooting-October 20th, 2021
Mr. Martin had us return back to campus for those who are able to, start a test shooting and understand better how stop-animation works, how DSLR cameras can be the effect when shooting the shots and everything to do with lightning. Later then, Mr. Martin brought the class up to the Mac lab to practice and understand how to edit individual shots when it comes to stop-motion animations.
There isn't a specific way to do it but, the way Mr. Martin demonstrated is a way that could save time and allow us to have a smooth and organized timeline through editing.
My group and I were given props to work with to make up a story within the hours of our time there and produce a 30-second video clip of our animation and this is how it turned out!
The video above was meant to test out and try out how it would go when I finally would have to edit my part of my stop-motion animation. It is definitely something new to learn and exciting to know it works out in the end.
Stop-Motion filming process
-October 6th, 2021
After understanding what needed to be done, I started out by making sure I had my props and my characters to start shooting. I had the privileged to film at the campus' film studio for 2 weekends straight and managed to get all the shots down.
These are a few images of the set that I worked with throughout my shooting progress.
Since I didn't have a camera, it was convenient that Mr. Martin encouraged me to use a stop-motion application that we can use to film, I honestly had a really amazing experience with the stop-motion application, it's called 'AnyMotion', it can be downloaded here. (sadly it's not available on android, only ios.)
After shooting, the application comes with an editor and an option to export each image to be either edited on my own (through premiere pro) or even in the app itself, with sound effects.
Demo video (no sound effects):
Moving on, I decided on editing the individual clips and adding in sound effects through premiere pro, in my opinion throughout Mr. Martin's lectures allowed me to understand the editor much better. Therefore, I didn't want to waste insights on not using the editor to edit.

First few seconds of the clips into editing, I was already a little nervous when adding in the sound effects, there were many things to be on the lookout for and especially being able to utilize the practices and exercise from the sound design exercises Mr. Martin had given us to try out as a part of our first project.

But I trusted the process and added in any kind of necessary sounds and edited my way from the start to the end. Additional things that I changed were also the timing on each frame, I thought it would be an idea for some shots to have a longer second when I felt like the whole scene was moving a little too fast.

Finally, I worked on the sound effects and changed the pitch of some of the verbal effects in my story too. I messed around with the equalizer on certain audio tracks as well and the volumes for certain scenes, making sure they weren't too loud or too quiet.
After all, is said and done, here is the final video.
Reflection
-November 22nd, 2021
For the final project, I was able to reflect on a few things. The first I want to point out was that it definitely was not easy working with small objects to move around shot by shot, it was very time and energy-consuming. But, being able to see it work in the end puts in motivation to go more than a minute long, but then again there was a deadline and I didn't want to go too over with how I wanted my story to turn out.
I had to make sure that I had enough time left to edit everything out because editing was one of the other challenges that I had to go through when I was working out this project, but with all honestly despite the countless trial errors and moments where I felt defeated it was still really fun to learn about these new things.
I'm not very familiar with all of these specific domains that are a part of my interest, but learning and gaining knowledge on them now makes me feel grateful and privileged to be able to know more about these and to hopefully discover more on my own.
