Project 1

Instructable Poster
January 20th, 2022
-

After time exploring media and learning about information design, it was time now to develop an infographic that presents a series of different processes as visuals rather than text.

Ms. Anis assigned the class in choosing one video from Pasta Grannies to create and design an infographic poster for ONE recipe selected. Pasta Grannies Channel provided by Ms. Anis.

My chosen pasta granny video:

After choosing a recipe video from the channel, Ms. Anis had us break down the video into highlighted, keyworded information to start off planning how the infographic would/should/could be designed.

Project 1 Tasks: (breaking down chosen video)
  • Identify your chosen video from Pasta Grannies
  • Initial research: processes, mood board, art style, sketches, etc
Apple strudel

Helena’s apple strudel background stories

-traditional way (ingredients from Helena’s region)
-Helena and daughters, Family hotel, Trans-Freifeld, Italy
-Apple strudel is always being served at Helena's family hotel
-This pastry is different from the Viennese version of apple strudel
-Helena would always make these pastries with her mother
-Helena's apple strudel is the Süd Tirol version with easy pastry dough.

Processes

Apple-filling of apple strudel ingredients (processes)
  • peel, course, and slice mixture of apples (which weigh about 1 kilo)
    • varieties of apples (golden delicious, Jonagold, Foochie)
  • zesting of the lemons
  • add a teaspoon of cinnamon, 100g sugar, mix all ingredients with 100g of walnuts, 25g of pine nuts (some cooks add salt hammers)
  • pour a sachet of vanilla sugar, a teaspoon of vanilla essence (alternative)
  • pour rum into the mixture (could also use brandy)
Pastry (dough) part of the apple strudel (processes)
  • 500 grams of flour
  • 250grams butter
  • 150g sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • add 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • MORE vanilla sugar
  • knead the dough until smooth
  • properly mix in all ingredients
  • rest dough for 30 minutes in the refrigerator
After refrigeration;
  • quantity of dough can be served for two
  • cut dough in half
  • sprinkle flour on table/board
  • flatten/roll out the pastry to 4 millimeters thick
  • trim edges to fit pastry on a baking tray
  • roll the pastry over a pin to conveniently transfer it on the tray
  • pour and pile the apples along the center of the dough
  • carefully flip the sides of the dough
  • make sure the ends of the dough are sealed
Oven Time
  • 25 mins in the oven at 170 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • check the pastry with a wooden toothpick
  • if the toothpick comes out clean, it is ready to be served
Serving
  • strudel should be served warm
  • leave the strudel to rest for about 15 minutes
  • dust some icing sugar over the strudel
  • serve it with warm homemade vanilla custard
Alternative toppings served with strudel, it can be served with:
  • vanilla custard
  • vanilla ice cream
  • pureed fruit
But originally served with vanilla custard.

Moodboard

For the moldboard, Ms. Anis provided some examples of instructable infographics in the first week of the class that could be used as a reference. Other than that, Ms. Anis gave a few tips in having a particular theme or design to our infographic by observing and analyzing the styles, environment, clothing-wear that the grannies/grandads wear in our chosen video recipe.

Here are a few examples of poster designs provided by Ms. Anis:

Figure 1.1 - Bibimbap infographic example

Figure 1.2 - American burger instructable infographic by Jing Zhang from Abduzeedo

The examples seen above are great ways to start in accumulating the ingredients in the poster design to later work on the design of the overall poster (background and fore-ground, mid-ground being the ingredients) at least in my interpretation.

Therefore, I started with the respective in seeing if there were any additional designs I could add to the infographic that will be created and drawn soon.

Video analyzation mood board:

Being able to break down the video into chunks of the processes and the style that each pasta granny is to capture each Grandma’s personality and unique dish identity in your poster as part of the narrative structure.

Next, I moved into determining the kind of style that could work with Helena's recipe cooking for apple strudel. I wanted to go with a sketchy kind of art style implemented into the infographic poster. I feel like it would fit the vintage/old feel to the video I watched, great examples I found of the style I am currently explaining can be seen below:

Now we move into the sketch of the infographic poster.

Figure 1.5 - 1st sketch progression, January 27th, 2022

I first started off with the sketch above with a list of ingredients, I found it much easier to draw them out in this kind of layout first before experimenting with mixing in the ingredients and directions in a more appealing layout.

it took a while to figure out which kind of layout I wanted to put it into as well as make sure each ingredient is visible in the poster when laying them out n a more summarised look to it.

After working out a quick sketch layout through numerous references on Pinterest, I quickly drew out the ingredients to the recipe of the apple strudel so that I can reuse it throughout drawing the process layout.

Finally getting the ingredients and the art style of drawing the ingredients out, it was time to work on the directions and fit it all in one poster along with an appealing layout to it.

It took a whole while in making sure to maintain the art style of the poster, but low and behold it is finally finished.

Reflection

What I've learned from this project is the importance of how infographics work. Being able to work on my own infographic was not an easy task, I had to make sure it conveyed what was being told in the infographic and of course, have an appealing design to it. Therefore, elements, texts, colors had to either contribute to each other or complement each other in what the infographic poster is trying to convey to a reader/viewer.

I wouldn't say I'm good at these things, but I think I was able to get a grip and the initial understanding of how neat and unique I want my layout and compositions to be in my infographic poster. It was fun to make up the colors but to also not stray away from the initial references from the granny pasta video.
