To start off the first project, the following brief as seen below are the requirements to be met up with to complete this project.

Project 1, Brief:

1. Modelling the gun

The first step to start off project 1 was of course to insert the reference image to assist in shaping the object into a gun. Which would be my chosen object to model out of the four that were stated in the brief, seen below is the reference image that I've chosen.

Figure 1.1 - Gun object reference image, April 25th, 2020

Implementing the image into the scene on Blender was the next step. Then I slowly shaped the gun out of the default object which was the cube through edit mode, pinpointing each vertice of the object to form the gun handle.

I added loop cuts continuously to assist in shaping and forming the much curvy parts of the gun as seen in the figure below. Its also seen that the object is slowly forming into the reference image.

Figure 1.4 - Shaping the gun handle(wireframe display), April 25th, 2020

When I've to go the bottom part (handle) of the gun down, I select the bottom face of the object where the handle of the trigger in the reference image starts and extruded the face along with scaling it down to its shape as seen in the reference.

Figure 1.8 - Shaping the gun trigger handle #4, April 25th, 2020

There were its processes to it and in all honestly, it took a while to shape it and connect the start of the trigger handle to the bottom half of the gun handle.

Next, I worked on the upper part of the gun, I used a cube and scaled it to its shape as seen in the reference image. Again a repeated process of loop cuts and adjustments of vertices to better form and shape the curvy parts of the top part of the gun.

Since the figure above is more of my attempts at modeling the gun to the best of its accuracy to the reference image, the front view of the gun needs its reference too. To better shape it.

The website where I reference my object model is an interactive display of the model itself, so I was able to capture a few views of the model for my reference.

I managed to complete the top part and the handle of the gun, as well as still making a few adjustments as I go into finishing up the modelling.

Next was the mid part of the gun, where I used a cylinder to help shape it, before going into edit mode to further adjust the vertices to better form that specific part of the gun.

Figure 1.13 - modeling mid part of the gun #2, April 30th, 2020

Next on the list into modeling, the gun was adding a few depths to the gun model, I extrude the face of the gun handle to achieve the extrusion of the grip of the gun. Practically finishing up the model and shape of the gun before texturing it.

Next up is to texture the model of the gun, adding a few splashes color of textures to add to the completion of the gun model.

2. Texturing (Shading)

When it came to texturing the model, I went for shading to apply the colors to the gun model. I did a few explorations on how to work out the nodes in the shading tab. But I had to refer a lot to a video that I searched on youtube to further understand in texturing of the 3D model.

Texturing 3D model gun, reference video:

The video above was quite straightforward to understand a few basics in starting out in texturing the objects. Other than that, I had a few explorations and alterations from the further assistance from the video above.

So I worked my way into altering the color of the gun model with the additional nodes that help determine the texture of the surface of the model.

Figure 1.16 -texturing through shading #2, May 6th, 2020

For the grip part of the gun, adding new material and adjusting the base color was how I achieved a different texture color even on the same part of the model surface (since it's only possible for one base color for the entirety of the model).

Accessing into edit mode of the shading tab, selecting the faces later then adding new material with a different base color, and finally assigning the selected faces on the object would achieve the altering textures.

Once the process is complete I returned to the 'layout' tab and accessed the 'viewport shading' tab to display the complete rendering of the gun, as seen below:

Reflection

The first few classes in 3D modeling had me on the edge of my seat, I was somewhat doubtful I wouldn't be able to progress along with the lessons in this module but at the same time, I was quite excited to learn all about 3D modeling. I didn't exactly have much knowledge on the whole perspectives of 3D designs or artistic creations. I was more towards 2D works. Although it didn't stop me from letting my imagination flow.

I believe that with enough practice and familiarising myself with Blender (which was the program that this module is utilizing to teach the students), I think I'll be able to create pretty cool things in 3D through my own preference of art.

Anyway, the first project on 3D modeling was all about hard surface modeling, with the lessons and exercises that Mr. Kamal had us indulge in definitely helped me a lot throughout this project and of course, exploring my way throughout the process of modeling my gun. I'd say I might have strayed away from how Mr. Kamal taught us initially informing the shape or modeling of an object but I'm pretty sure I remained the basics of how Mr. Kamal advised throughout or exercises.

I'm aware that, the model that I've come to reside on still needs a few more tweaking in the in-depth and detailed design on a gun and maybe a little more understanding of how the texture and viewport displays work with lighting and rendering but other than that, I'm quite satisfied with how it turned out as the shape of the gun.
