Next on the list was my attempts at turning the prepared drawings from the flipbook into a digitized animated version of it.

-and to do so, was guided, presented, and demonstrated through Mr. Hafiz's tutorial session where he taught the class the first few basics of working our way through adobe animate.

Flipbook digitalization (Adobe animate)

The way I started off with the animation is by using the scanned images from the flipbook and implementing them into the stage of the animation program as frames but on a separate layer.

Later then working on a separate layer, frame by frame drawing in the scenes with the help of the references, see below.

- implementing reference, progress #1, April 25th, 2022

- timeline, layer separation, progress #2, April 25th, 2022

- onion-skin layer, progress #3, April 25th, 2022

As you can see drawing in a few frames, we can see how the animation process comes into play.

- mid drawing of keyframes, progress #4, April 25th, 2022

It was a tedious process, but once I've got the initial positions of certain drawings in each frame that share the same placements it gets easier and easier. Although at times there are parts where forgetting to erase a previous frame when inserting keyframes instead of inserting 'blank keyframes' happens and can disrupt the flow and sensical scene when the animation plays.

- finishing up frame drawings, progress #5, April 25th, 2022

Finally wrapping up the final few frames to draw into the scene, the completed animation can be seen below:

Tasks for Week 5 (April 26th, 2022):
  • Squash and Strech animation
    • Practice an animation of a ball being squashed and stretched in regard to its action (being thrown at a wall/bouncing)
The first practice of understanding squash and stretch in animation was demonstrated by Mr. Hafiz during our lecture. He showed the class and animated a ball that seems to be thrown at a wall. From there the physics comes into play when the ball is impacted onto the wall it gets squashed and the velocity of the ball to reach the wall gets stretched.

The images seen below present the progression and the number of keyframes that are used to make up this animation seen.

The final outcome of the animation:

Coming into Mr. Kamal's demonstration of the animation, we are to animate a ball bouncing all the way across the screen as it loses its bounce. It's a way to identify the animation principles used in this animation exercise which was:
  • Straight ahead
  • Pose to pose
  • Arcs
There was a whole process that which Mr. Kamal assisted the class in animating the ball bounce out. We placed the different balls in each frame from start to end, and slowly filled in the in-betweens.

The purpose of the exercise squash and stretch above is one of the practicals to prepare for animating the metamorphosis project in order to understand the principles of animation which are squash and stretch and even anticipation.
