Week 12 - 20-second animation trailer
June 7th, 2022
animation trailer progress
After Feedback [May 31st, week 11] -
Final suggestions/recommendations
Animatic refinement - > animation
- First scene
- (Scene 1, Shot 1)
- Apply levels (minimum 5 levels) to the scene
- Second scene
- (Scene 2, Shot 1)
- Scene equivaltes to paralex scene
- The horizon line should be a little lower
- (Scene 2, Shot 1a)
- -A different view of capturing Maple walking up to Charlotte
- Lady appears in the foreground, Maple in mid-ground, the background consists of the environment
- (Scene 3, Shot 1 - 1a)
- Perspective distances from Maple to Lady Charlotte should be much closer to depict a more intimate scene (which can be finalized into animation)
- (Scene 5, Shot 1 - 1b)
- -A zoom-in pan to Maple to again depict intimacy
There were still a few more changes to be added to the animatic after consulting it with Mr. Hafiz from my 'Animation Fundamentals' class, he suggested adding in a few foreshadowing scenes and a way to make the transition of the trailer smoother, for the trailer's story to make a little more sense.
Week 13, progress:
Starting out the animation, I had to begin with the scenes and the backdrops to achieve a parallax scene and made sure that my camera movement in the animation was decent enough.
I worked the first scene out which can be seen below:
storyboard, page 1 |
-with the elements of different layers to the background (mountains, midground (character and foreground, tree branches/gravestones).

Since I drew each of the elements in the scene on different layers it makes it easier for editing the movements of the elements in the scene as a parallax, below is the attempt of achieving that particular scene:
Parallax first scene editing in After Effects |
Feedback (Week 14 - June 28th, 2022):
Feedback is given by Mr. Martin:
ways to improve this shot are to:\
camera movements on the Z-axis would add to the scene's dynamic movements to it.
each element in the layer can have a more 3D look to it as the camera movement pans
After effects 3D camera movement (scene suggestion for refinement provided by Mr. Martin):
a simpler way to understand the 3D camera applied to the scene:
- turn all layers into 3D,
- Apply camera: One node, 15mm(wide angle), arrange the composition, you might need to go back to illustrator to make the background bigger,
- slow push-in camera movement: 2 key points only on Z-axis.
- Done!
Second scene parallax, progress #1 |
Second scene parallax, progress #2 |
-after completing each layer, I dragged the photoshop file into after effects and edit the movements from then on.

Feedback (Week 14 - June 28th, 2022):
Feedback is given by Mr. Martin:
ways to improve this shot are to:
When editing and implementing the animations of the characters, I had to do them separately.- additional elements like (people walking in the background rather than the foreground of the scene), a motorbike passing through behind Charlotte as she walks by on the street, or tree trunks in the foreground as Charlotte passes by
- people should be much more detailed even in the foreground (it wouldn't look too pleasing to have the mas just shadow figures)
1. Animation
The idea behind the second scene is to have Charlotte walk down the sidewalk of her hometown. It was as simple as a walk cycle applied onto the character and a few wind action lines and leaves that follow along with it to add that feel to the scene.
Second scene Charlotte, the animation progress #1 |
Second scene Charlotte, the animation progress #2 |
Now we come into the same scene although just shot from another angle, in this shot Maple will be seen walking up to Charlotte and meowing at her, trying to catch her attention.
Feedback (Week 14 - June 28th, 2022):
Feedback is given by Mr. Martin:
ways to improve this shot are to:
- add subtle movements to charlotte's stand still (surprised motion), a gush of wind that blows upon her coat making it sway to the environment. Instead of having it so still.
- camera pan movement can start from her hips to be able to have time as Maple walks into the frame.
Third scene Charlotte, the animation progress #3 |
The fourth scene is a scene where these two characters share a moment together, rather a much more silly scene where Maple drinks milk from the bowl and happens to have a very soaked face which leads Charlotte to giggle, he then shakes off the milk leading up to Charlotte covering her face a little but still being very attracted to the kitten.
Feedback (Week 14 - June 28th, 2022):
Feedback is given by Mr. Martin:
ways to improve this shot are to:
- the right-hand side of the scene should occupy more of Maple's presence
- Charlotte and Maple are overlaying over one another which depletes the composition of the scene
Fourth scene Maple & Charlotte, animation progress |
This final but not the least of the scenes is a moment where Maple will be laying atop Charlotte's lap. He looks up at Charlotte and meows at her, comforting her as he slowly falls asleep on her lap a leaf would slowly descend falling down on the kitten, foreshadowing the name of the kitten; Maple.
Fifth Scene, Maple and Charlotte again, animation progress |
When I completed sketching out the animated parts of the scene which was the lady and the kitten mostly, I cleaned out the lines and colored them in, it was quite the process.
Scene 1, Parallax scene, Progress #1 |
Scene 2, kitchen scene, Progress #2 |
Scene 3, Lap scene, Progress #3 |
Once all the coloring was completed, it was time to edit each scene and put them all together.
2. Editing
moving into after effects the first thing I worked on was adding a motorbike into the second scene where Charlotte walks along the sidewalk, it was simple as adding keyframes and moving the object across the screen to have it seem as it was moving.
Scene 2, Progress #1 |
Later then I added in a glow effect and filter that acts as a transition from the present-day into the scenes that were flashbacks.
Scene 2, Progress #2 |
I did similar control to each scene that required its respective edits to make the scene the way I depicted them.
In this particular scene as well, I used the puppet tool to have Charlotte's coat sway to the wind, since in the scene she stands quite still as Maple makes his way to her.
Scene 3, Progress |
I made sure to finish this scene off by adding the glow effect as well since its a flashback scene in the trailer
Since adobe animate files were able to insert into after-effects it made it so much easier to work around the movements of the characters, I added a slow zoom for this scene adding an intimate moment for these two characters.
Scene 4, Progress |
Last but certainly not least was the scene where Maple laid in CHarlotte's lap, for this scene there was much that needed to add an edit to it, since it was very heavily animated, but I made sure to zoom into Maple to add that intimate moment for these two again.
Scene 5, Progress |
Once I added in all the audio like the background music along with a few sound effects it was finally completed, and the trailer is all done.
