Week 1 - Constructive workflow

Managing time with work

August 29th, 2022

The first day of the first week in Motion Graphics and Compositing started off nice and slow, Mr. Fauzi that was our lecturer for this module, introduced himself and gave insights on effective ways to manage the upcoming projects that Mr. Fauzi will provide us throughout these 14 weeks.

The tasks require as projects that we'll be working on throughout these 14 weeks are:
  • Task 1: Technical and Motion Graphics Sensibilities
  • Task 2: Channel bumper
  • Task 3: Channel Ident/Identity

A brief of the module information booklet was skimmed through along with the class but most importantly Mr. Fauzi focused on a slide that was prepared by the man himself that had everything to do with productive workflow:

(Constructive workflow_slide_week1_by_Mr. Fauzi)

From the prepared slides, Mr. Fauzi was able to enlighten us on how the work we are going to carry out should have its enjoyment but at the same time work practically. There was even a small session which I found interesting myself, Mr. Fauzi showed us a trick where when we intertwine our hands and have; for example:
  • right thumb over left thumb -> majority utilization of left side of the brain
  • left thumb over right thumb ->majority utilization of right side of the brain
but in retrospect, we humans utilize both sides of our brains, but it's still interesting to know which of the sides we'd have major thoughts on.

Moving on, our final part of the classes was to prepare for the following week's (Week 2) exercises that we'll be carrying out, Mr. Fauzi showcased a demonstration through a video that he prepared.

One of the first exercises that we'll be carrying out is to work on a collage, as seen below:

Things that should be prepared to assist us in this exercise in the upcoming week are:
  • images (from magazines, newspapers, old books, etc.)
  • scissors
  • glue
  • construction paper (base)
-with the outcome of this exercise, we'll be able to learn all about composition to better the experience digitally when we work on typographical composition editing, which involves keyframing and such.

Week 2 - Intro to Motion Graphics

What is motion graphics?

September 5th, 2022

The second week is in motion graphics and we're already breaking down what it means, from the aspects of what its literal definition is to the history of motion graphics.

Motion graphics literally mean moving images or images that move but when it comes to motion graphics its major component is all in the text and essentially how it's designed to be animated with graphics.

"Ever since motion graphics first entered the scene, there’s been a debate about the line between them and full animation. The opening credits of Hitchcock’s Psycho is an early example of motion graphics, where the marriage of sound, motion, and graphic design come together exceptionally well."

Motion Graphics Examples: Branding

Let's look at the video below that Mr. Fauzi provided, from my understanding of the video there were many transitions and unique compositions of the text to the elements along with the background that made up to be the video.

Speaking of 'communication', graphic design is also known to create videos that promote or showcase a brand in a quick, simple, and interesting way to a consumer or even just a viewer. Different to attract any person into checking out what this particular brand is with the assistance of motion graphics.

Motion Graphics Examples: Television Title Sequence

Another factor to understand about motion graphics is how it communicates with a viewer, that's why motion graphics and how its major component is text falls into a category of movie titles or headers in video-like content.

Motion Graphics Examples: Storytelling

Next up, we have storytelling and how it associates itself with motion graphics, anyone can tell a story and they have that decision on how they want to execute it and that is exactly what motion graphics can do for storytellers too!

Again a video that Mr. Fauzi provided below shows a prime example of how motion graphics work perfectly with storytelling.

As seen above, motion graphics isn't only focused on text even if it means that it's a major component. Other elements like the form or silhouette of a person/object can be applied to motion graphics. From my understanding, motion graphics should have the simplicity to it but even with their simplicity, the way we animate and put them into compositions make them really pop!

There are other examples of emphasizing motion graphics with these titles, such as:
  • Creating Awareness
  • Explaining a concept
  • Share a product video
Now that we've understood what exactly is motion graphics, Mr. Fauzi continued working on physical collages for our practice session.

Week 3 - Compositing Toolkit

Understanding Compositing Toolkits

September 12th, 2022

In the 3rd week of Motion graphics and compositing class, we delve into learning about compositing toolkits. It was a short and simple lecture but there were still very insightful factors to keep a look out for when we start our works that regard compositing.

There are elements in many works of art and that goes for composition too, what exactly are those compositions?

A good composition would usually hold these elements:

Elements of Composition in Art_Figure
  • Unity
  • Balance
  • Movement
  • Rhythm
  • Focus
  • Contrast
  • Pattern
  • Proportion
"Composition is the term used to describe the arrangement of the visual elements."
It is the organization or composition of art and design components such as line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space in accordance with the principles of art and design. Looking deeper into these elements let's start with:

1. Unity

Unity: Are all of the components of the composition feel as if they belong together? By integrating similar parts within the composition and positioning them in a way that brings them all together, unity in an artwork provides a sense of harmony and wholeness.

Unity_Figure

"Variety adds interest by using contrasting elements within the composition."

2. Balance

Balance_figure

Balance is the impression that the composition "feels right" and is not lopsided on one side.

A symmetrical layout offers a sense of tranquility, but an asymmetrical pattern adds a sense of movement.

3. Rhythm

Rhythm: A piece of art, like music, can have a rhythm or underlying beat that directs your eye to view the artwork at a certain tempo.

4. Focus

Focus (or Emphasis): The viewer's eye eventually wants to rest on the "most essential" element or focal point in the artwork; otherwise, the eye feels lost, wandering around in space.

5. Contrast

Contrast: Artwork with high contrast in light and dark, for example, have a different feel than paintings with low contrast in light and dark.

Since there are more listed on what the elements of compositions are it ties into the principles of design, the principles of design are what makes good compositions- well, good.

All that was thought out briefly and acknowledged by Mr. Fauzi during our third-week lecture is to make sure we prepare and understand to better work out our first project.

Week 4 - Kinetic Typography

Making Kinetic Typography in After Effects.

September 19th, 2022

In the fourth week of motion graphics class, we started off with a really short lecture. Mr. Fauzi assigned us to watch videos after the class since he wanted to prioritize in consulting us on our progress for the first few practices to the out first project.

Regarding our week 4 lecture, we looked into designing kinetic typography in after effects, with the video below that was provided by Mr. Fauzi:

What I was able to identify in the video that was shared is how it is a simple act to work out when editing and designing the composition, but it would still take a lot of practice. Its the work of creativity along with technical works of how adobe after effects work.

Another video that was shared was a demonstration of Mr. Fauzi's tutorial demonstration of how we can design kinetic typography. As seen below:

Mr. Fauzi's way of demonstrating this activity in a way is much similar to the video above, but there were uses of graphs to help ease the animation of separate elements that aren't typography. Again it still takes a lot of practice to create the composition and movements to it.

-This leads into the 4th week of practice to assist us in the upcoming projects/tasks for this module.

Week 5 - Animation Techniques

In-depth learning of motion graphics animating techniques

September 26th, 2022

During our online 5th week in Motion graphics and compositing class, Mr. Fauzi actually provided the class with a video for us to watch and understand to help in progressing through our exercises and upcoming projects.

The video that Mr. Fauzi has us watch during our free time, it was a simple tutorial and demonstration of techniques to help us through our projects and exercises.

The video elaborated 4 different useful techniques that can be practiced and applied to our upcoming projects.

Those 4 techniques are:
  • Animated lines
  • Shape-splodes (exploding shapes)
  • Repeated circles
  • Spread your work (combining/merging each animated work into one)
-The video consisted of really simple steps to work out each technique of animated motion graphics. The video is edited in a way that we could look back at it in times of need.

Week 6 - Keying Overview

How to Remove Backgrounds (Green-screening)

Oct 3rd, 2022

For the 6th week into motion graphics and compositing, Mr. Fauzi assigned the class in watching the video below to gain on how to utilize presets and effects on After Effects to help on our second project, where we should let our creativity flow in designing a channel bumper for a chosen brand.

The video above would help in understanding how we can use the technique for our own projects and personal projects if it is up to our liking.

Week 10 - Motion Tracking

Practices in Motion Tracking

Oct 31st, 2022

In the 11th week into motion graphics and compositing, Mr. Fauzi assigned the class to look into a video where it covers an editing topic called Motion tracking.

This particular editing style was said to be able to help as an additional edit to our final project.

The video covers through sub-topics how to be able to apply this motion tracking on our videos or onto other videos when editing, firstly is to:
  • use the tracking camera
  • analyze the track
  • adding a wall
  • creating solids
  • adjusting compositing settings
  • final adjustments
  • final touches
-once these steps are followed-through, you'll be able to see that additional pictures or images are within the video where motion-tracking editing has been applied to.
