Week 13 - Final Project

Abstract Motion

Nov 21st, 2022

To start the final project, the following brief, as seen below, are the requirements to be met to complete this project.

Final Project, Brief:

DESCRIPTION:
1. Students will synthesize the knowledge gained in tasks 1, 2, and 3 for application in task 4. Students are to create a theme-based abstract motion graphic video that consists of an excellent audiovisual in 3D/2D, mixed media, or any experimental visual output with a strong theme.

2. Students describe and reflect on their competencies within the design studio context, supported by evidence. Reflect on how to empathize with others within group settings, interact positively within a team and foster stable and harmonious relationships for productive teamwork. Reflective writing is part of the *TGCP.

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Students are to use the information for any proposed channel (*existing or fictional)
    • create a mood board that reflects their concept/idea
    • storyboard
    • animatics
    • explore appropriate audio to uplift the motion tempo
  2. *The Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities Portfolio (TGCP) is a document that collates all assessments produced in a module and reflects a student’s acquisition of the Module Learning Outcomes and Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities. Each student develops an ePortfolio, a web-based portfolio in the form of a personal academic blog. The ePortfolio is developed progressively for all modules taken throughout Semesters 1 to 6 and culminates with a final Portfolio in printed form produced in the final semester. The ePortfolio must encapsulate the acquisition of Programme Learning Outcomes and Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities to showcase the distinctiveness and identity of the student as a graduate of the program.
SUBMISSION:
  1. Students will start with thumbnail sketches and test a wide range of conceptual ideas through digitization using the appropriate software. Students conclude by selecting and presenting their proposed channel bumper interpretation in the instructed format/s.
    • Compiled work in progress in a slide (*mood board, style guide, sketches, storyboard, technical processes as posted in e-portfolio).
    • Final output will include a 30 – 60 sec video (*.mp4, h2.64, 16:9 - 1920 X 1080, 25 fps, ACC, 48kHz, uploaded to YouTube channel)
  2. Submit the e-portfolio’s URL.

Progress #1 - Moodboard (ideas):

The first process that I indulged in for the final project required our ideas to go beyond anything we choose on implementing through an editing style that involves motion graphics and abstract motion within it.

I went out of my way to find a few and think through a few ideas to approach this project, the finest few videos seen below are the kind of style and motion graphic (editing style) I would want to go for.

A much more simplified version would be put into production from the video reference above as my first idea along with a message that conveys to "Just Be Yourself".

For my second idea, I would like to merge typography, and stock videos (live-action) with motion elements of animated 2D visuals to convey a short word-by-word line "Explore. Live. Create", the story would be told through the visuals that are to be displayed.

Abstract Motion - Idea (Proposal) & Audio:

The next step would be looking into storyboarding, after an idea and a little feedback from Mr. Fauzi on my ideas.

For the Audio wise listed below, there were a couple audio choices that came to mind.

For this first audio, there's its calmness to it, which is something that I'd like to potray in the abstract motion animation of this project, and towards the end of it, there's a much uplifting feel to the music which I think would fit quite well in the storytelling of my abstract animation.

The second choice of audio looks into a more relaxed feel to it, it has a slow uprising sound to the melody and harmonies that could fit into the flow of the abstract motion animation. There are also little sounds that seem to potray little 'meows' by cats, which fits perfectly for the characters in my motion abstract animation.

It's quite a tough choice between these two audios, but  I feel myself leaning towards the second audio that would flow better with the storyboard of the animation.

After a few more searching for audio, I believed that there would be a much more suitable soundtrack that would fit this animation. As seen below;

Rain Background Music Bluey - Composed By Joff Bush and Jazz D'arcy

I decided on settling on a soundtrack from a series titled 'Bluey', it had an uplifting feel to the audio towards the end which is what I wanted for my abstract motion animation.

Progress #2 - Storyboard (ideas):

Progressing into sketching out the storyboard for my abstract motion animation, it follows the style of the first idea video reference of cut-out pieces of the main character (black cat) and the surroundings of each scene.

Those elements would portray themselves as abstract motion and it would be a little easier for me to edit through them with basic and simple movements.

The story of the animation is to tell about "Being Yourself". Following a black cat that is woken up by his alarm clock to a cloudy and rain-filled morning. He gets up and walks down his hallway, passing through picture frames of him when he was a bright and smiley kitten.

This black cat had grown up to be himself until he had to move into a gloomy and dull city where every cat would look down on him for being colorful and bright even for a black cat, something the dull city least expects.

To be able to fit in, the black cat had to push down his colorful personality to get through his days in this dim and boring city neighborhood.

He navigates through the busy streets on a rainy morning to carry out his routines, even in attempts to be as boring and dull as the other cats he was still picked on by small whispers as he passes by until suddenly-

He encountered a rather strange phenomenon that happened right in front of his eyes, standing right in front of him; another cat opposite of him was standing in bright and lively weather as opposed to the soaking wet and stormy climate he was in.

The sunny cat introduced herself by stepping forward and observing him as well as greeting him by purring against him. The black cat was confused as to why she was the way she was until he looked into her bright and colorful eyes.

The black cat stared into her eyes as he was reminded of flashbacks of his fun and exciting ways when growing up as a colorful personalized kitten. The black cat looked down at the sunny cat and into the new outlook of neighborhood weather (all sunshine and rainbows), the black cat slowly got his smile back remembering who he was!

Storyboard - Pdf:

Progress #3 - Frames (Characters and Environments):

Next on the list was to start drawing out the environment and the characters as well as simplified elements according to the sketches of the storyboard to complement the motion abstract animation altogether.

I began by sketching each of the scenes according to the storyboard and of course implementing methods from previous projects in Motion graphics and Compositing, where I separated the layers so that it would be easier for me to apply movement on the separate layer (objects) for each scene.

I had a few color palettes and a reference color palate for one of the cats that the main character (black cat) will meet along the way on his journey.

Once I completed each of the scenes and determined the layers to be separated, I moved the PSD file into after effects and began editing.

Frames (Environment & Characters):

Progress #4 - Animating - (Motion Graphics):

Moving into motion graphics, I went back and forth when it came to the sound effects of the animation, although the process of editing style went through its normal and basic method.

The process of the motion was a basic and simple movement that was done throughout my projects, although I added in other elements to overlay and make the abstract animation much more alive and stand out.

The usage of green-screened (Effect: keylight 1.2 - to get rid of the greenscreen) stock footage was also as helpful to create this art and editing style for this abstract motion animation.

The other process was making sure the timing was according to and in sync with the soundtrack audio. Once everything was according to the audio, I accumulated each pre-composiitng into one whole composition for a much more organized workflow.

REFLECTION

-

December 5th, 2022

For this final project, it definitely took me a while to come up with an idea for an abstract animation even through countless references from seniors, I just couldn't be able to instantly know what kind of animation I wanted to do. We did have the freedom of any kind of animation as long as it had motion and it was abstract as well as the storytelling that is implemented into motion graphics.

Although after a while, I decided to dive into the idea of conveying a little message through an animation about cats. This is a message that lets viewers know that at times in life there are certain things or certain people that make you feel uncomfortable in your own skin just so you could "fit in" with them. To an extent where you'd lose who you really are.

It was quite the blind path that I went down when carrying out this idea, but I told myself to trust the process and the outcome was surprising! I'm glad to be able to apply more of what I learned in the previous projects in Motion Graphics and Compositing to this final project where storytelling was one of the requirements of the factors.

As well not realize that the story that played out in this final project had close links to what I experienced not too long ago. Therefore with this impact on hoping that my message could reach others, I was able to learn and understand even more about the variety of editing-styles in after effects.
