Project 2: Audio Storytelling

Week 7 - Audio storytelling

Drafting folklore to narrate and record dialogue

Oct 11th, 2022

In the first step of the project, Mr. Razif assigned the class to pick a story preferably folklore related to come up with scripts/narration/dialogue of the story that will be told.

I went forth to choose between the story/movie 'The Chronicle of Narnia' and 'Kung Fu Panda' but decided to go with the first choice, I produced a draft of  all the necessities in assisting me to tell the story like:
  • Storyline/plot-points
  • Story narration sources
  • visual sources (from the movie)

Project 2 - Storyline (Script proposal) - The Chronicles of Narnia:

Once all of the following was prepared, the next step to follow is by recording the narration from the proposal above.

Mr. Razif's feedback on the script is to shorten the narration when telling the story so that it won't over limit the fixed duration of 3 - 4 minutes long.

Since Narnia is centered around London/Europe, I decided to go for a British accent as voice acting when recording the scripts and dialogue.

Audio Recording - Progress #1:

Before audio recording, which will be done through the standard iPhone microphone, I tweaked a little on the narration and dialogue for the script that I'll be utilizing to record the audio to tell the story.

Below is the finalized script, where I mixed and matched and also simplified the story between the written story and the movie.

Finalized narration and dialogue -

Apparatus used:
  • Standard iPhone microphone (Mic)
  • Integrated sound recording app (Program used)
Once I had it all prepared I just had to record the audio whilst going through the script.

Audio Editing - Progress #2:

After recording the audio, I found that during audio recording there were many mouth-clicks within my audio, with the exercise that was done in the 9th week (radio commercial exercise), I carried a similar process of diminishing the mouth sounds to have a clear sounding track of the storytelling narration.

Getting rid of the mouth clicks that were picked up in the audio during recording, is a simple process.

In the waveform panel of adobe audition, I implemented the audio track to apply an effect that helps get rid of the mouth clicks, by entering:
  • waveform >select audio
  • effects panel > diagnostics >DeClicker (process)
  • Diagnostic panel will appear > Presets (default > heavy reduction) >Scan (as seen above)
    • amounts of clicks will be identified within the audio recording
After diminishing the mouth clicks during the audio track, I placed the audio track into the multitrack session and continued from then on.

Once all that was out of the way, in each audio track for the scenes (scripted) I increased the decibels of the waveform (by tuning up the dial) to make it sound slightly louder since the audio was quite soft after recording and implementing it into adobe audition.

The next step is to get rid of the background noise, to my surprise, there was not much to alter for this step. Since I recorded in the bedroom setup, the sound seemed to bounce less in that particular setup.

Resolving into convenience when reducing the BG noise for each audio track recorded. As seen below is the process of slightly reducing the BG noise.

The next step in audio production was to layer and arranged the audio tracks recorded along with sound effects and background music that was used.

Background music that was utilized:

The final step was to do a sound check to make sure that each audio track aligns with one another and making sure that none of the audio comes in too late or too early.

Once it was all completed I exported the file progressing into editing the audio with the visuals in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Audio + Visual Editing - Progress #3:

The next step was to gather clips and images that can tell the story visually according to the recorded and edited audio.

All the clips that were gathered and used were from a youtube channel of each clip from the movie -
Once I downloaded each of the clips I implemented them into premiere pro and begin editing from there.

It was quite a simple process, I only had to extract the clips and visuals that meet perfectly with the recorded audio script.

The idea of adding captions to start off the storytelling can be seen below.

It was quite a long process, constantly layering clips and visuals over one another while adding in simple edits of fading in and out as transitions to the continuous clip/visual.

When it was all completed. which took about 2 days, I exported the edit. Resulting in the final outcome that can be watched below.
