Week 9 - Project 3

Channel Identity

Oct 24th, 2022

To start the third project, the following brief, as seen below, are the requirements to be met to complete this project.

Project 3, Brief:

DESCRIPTION:
Students will synthesize the knowledge gained in Task 1 and 2 for application in Task 3.
Students are to continue with the previously chosen channel in Task 2 to create a channel ident motion graphic video.

REQUIREMENTS:
Students are to use the information for any proposed channel (*existing or fictional)
  • create a mood board that reflects their concept/idea
  • storyboard
  • animatics
  • explore appropriate audio to uplift the motion tempo
Students will start with thumbnail sketches and test a wide range of conceptual ideas through digitization using the appropriate software. Students conclude by selecting and presenting their proposed channel bumper interpretation in the instructed format/s.

SUBMISSION:
  1. Compiled Proposal in Slide (*mood board, style guide, sketches, storyboard, technical processes as posted in e-portfolio).
  2. Final output will include a 15 – 30 sec video (*.mp4 or . MOV, h2.64, 16:9 - 1920 X 1080, 25 fps, ACC, 48kHz uploaded to YouTube channel).

Progress #1 - References & sketches (ideas):

I started out with the kind of style and direction of introducing my continuous project of the gameplay Night in the woods and the major characters in the following game.

Therefore I took cartoon series like Steven Universe, Bluey, and Adventure time that introduce their characters with an action/expression that they carry out along with typography, naming out the character they introduced.

Adventure Time - Finn & Jake, INTRO CARD

I took these examples into photoshop and did a rough sketch of my visuals of how I wanted to display these characters from the game.

To my surprise, I came out with 2 ideas on how I wanted to approach this project. I had two choices introducing new characters from the game (which are major characters) or introducing a character that was shown in the previous project (Channel Bumper) but with a variety of level appearances that she displays herself in the game.

Idea #1 - introducing Major (new) Character(s) - sketches:

Idea #2 - introducing variety level (display) Character - sketches:

But even with two ideas, I had to narrow down my choices, so I picked the first idea where I get to utilize gameplay footage to introduce each of the characters in the game.

Progress #2- Frames (Characters):

I quickly worked on drawing out each of the characters in the previous art style of the 2nd project (channel bumper). Making sure each of the body parts of the characters that will be altered with motion during editing are in separate layers.

-it allows me to easily alter the motion of these separate layers that after-effects identify as objects.

Frames (Characters):

Characters (down the list) - Mae, Gregg, Bea, Angus

Progress #3 - Audio editing:

The next step was to integrate the kind of music/audio that would fit in with the style, aesthetic, and rhythm that would fit this channel identity for the game Night in the Woods. So I utilized the soundtrack from the actual game.

All OSTs from the game Night in the Woods belong to their rightful owner(s) and are used for education purposes only.

Next, I attempted to shorten the track, it was a minute too long when a channel identity should at least reach 30 -45 seconds long.

I used Adobe audition to help with shortening the soundtrack, But after many tries, I managed to get it down to a minute long.

Night In The Woods - TRAILER II (Shortened) - Edited by me:

Progress #4 - Animating (Characters):

Next up was animating the characters by using the simple presets of altering the separate layers of the PSD file in after effects. Which is separated into separate compositions to later then be accumulated into one final composition containing each relevant composition as a part of the project.

I repeated this process for the 3 other characters making sure when animating (altering/adding motion) the characters I put in a different kind of expression or body language to display their personality more. But at the end of each of their action, I would want them to wave.

Progress #4a - Animating (Motion graphics):

The final step in this process is adding int typography (their names) to the scene to introduce each of the characters entirely.

I as well added a few elements that are meant to potray these characters as their essential belongings and such, which were all used animating with motion.

Once I went through the whole composition and added in a few tweaks, it was completed!

Final production - Night in the Woods (Channel Identity):

REFLECTION

-

Nov 10th, 2022

The 3rd project into Motion Graphics and Compositing was quite fun in my opinion, but I was happy to reflect and understand more about the kind of software that I used to carry out these projects. At the same time, the reason why it's so much fun as well could be that I'm putting forth a project that introduces an interest that I hold very close to my heart.

The game that was able to cross with my work for this module made me so much more motivated and uplifted with a couple ideas to put forth this project with the game that I've known for 6 years now. There were still quite a few ideas that I could try out and maybe for my own personal projects I could try and carry them out.

Other than that, I also faced a few challenges during editing in after effects, but it thought me to overcome them through countless trials and errors (along with a bunch of youtube videos of tutorials on how to work out after effects) in the end, it was a project that I quite enjoyed, I wish to hopefully come back to this project and work out alternative art styles or even editing styles regarding this project!
